Rain, cold, or heat: how to protect yourself and your electric wheelchair all year
Your electric wheelchair gives you freedom on wheels. But whether it’s a chilly winter day, a sudden summer downpour, or a sweltering heatwave, taking a few precautions will help you enjoy your trips safely and comfortably. Here’s a practical guide to keeping both you and your chair in top form – whatever the season.
Can you use your electric wheelchair in the rain?
Yes, you can – just be mindful. Light rain or drizzle is fine, but heavy rain is best avoided. Most electric wheelchairs are water-resistant, but they are not completely waterproof.
If you’re caught in a sudden downpour, protect your chair – especially the joystick and electronics – to prevent damage:
- Seek shelter until the rain eases.
- Use a waterproof cover for the joystick or control panel. No cover? A plastic bag works as an emergency solution.
- Avoid deep puddles, mud, or poorly drained paths.
- After your ride: dry your chair thoroughly with a towel and leave it in a warm, dry place for at least 12 hours. Check that your joystick and brakes are working before heading out again.
Take extra care of your battery
Cold weather can reduce your battery’s range. Don’t leave your chair exposed to freezing temperatures:
- Park in a dry, frost-free spot, preferably indoors.
- Charge the battery at least once a month to prevent it from completely discharging.
- If you venture outside in the cold, remember that battery performance decreases, so your travel range may be shorter.
Keep it cool during hot summer days!
Summer precautions:
- Avoid leaving your wheelchair in direct sun – electronics and wiring can overheat. Shade or indoor parking is best.
- Keep the joystick and control panel out of direct sunlight. Cover them with a light cloth or use a sunshade to protect the plastics and screen.
- Never charge your chair in full sun. Always choose a ventilated, shaded spot.
Stay safe on the road
Winter conditions can be tricky. Wet or icy surfaces, darkness, or sudden hail can all be hazards. Always follow the traffic rules for wheelchair users, and keep these tips in mind:
- Check your tires. Proper tread ensures grip on slippery surfaces.
- A small reduction in tire pressure can improve traction on snow or ice.
- Make yourself visible: check your lights, wear reflective clothing, or use a safety vest.
Protect yourself, too!
In winter
Cold weather can feel harsher in a wheelchair. Keep warm with:
- Breathable layers and a wind- or water-resistant outer layer.
- Hat, gloves, scarf, and thick socks.
- Consider wheelchair-specific accessories, like rain blankets and foot protectors (e.g., My Add On).

In summer
- Plan outings during cooler hours – morning or evening – and drink plenty of water. A cooling towel or mini misting fan can help.
- Dark seat cushions heat up quickly. Cover with a light towel or breathable seat cover, and wear airy clothing.
- Sunshades, umbrella holders, or small USB fans can make even the hottest days more comfortable.
Any weather, any season
With a little preparation, you can enjoy your freedom all year round. Rain, winter chill, or summer sun – your electric wheelchair can take you wherever you want, as long as you care for it and yourself.
Stay alert to extreme temperatures, protect your chair, and take a moment after each ride to check that everything is in top condition.
