Traveling by train, tram or bus with your wheelchair: tips for a stress-free journey
Taking public transport with a wheelchair can feel complicated at first. You are, of course, welcome on every train, tram, and bus, but it helps to know the best way to go about it. In this guide, you’ll find all the practical rules, useful links, and tips to travel safely and comfortably.
Traveling by train (NMBS/SNCB)
With NMBS/SNCB, you can book assistance in advance for your journey. Staff will do their best to help you safely board and exit the train. This service is free, whether you are traveling within Belgium or internationally.
→ Find all the details on how to reserve assistance here.
Practical tips:
- For some connections, assistance can be booked up to 3 hours before departure; for others, you must book at least 24 hours in advance.
- Arrive at the meeting point in the station at least 20 minutes before departure.
- If your journey includes a connection, plan enough time to transfer safely: at least 8 minutes if you don’t require assistance to move through the station, and 15 minutes if you do.
Traveling at a discount with SNCB
- If you are entitled to the increased reimbursement for healthcare costs, you can receive a discount on train tickets in Belgium.
- Your carer travels for free with the NMBS/SNCB Free Carer Card.
Traveling by tram or bus (De Lijn)
With De Lijn, you don’t need to reserve. However, it is still wise to check in advance whether your stop is wheelchair-accessible. If it isn’t, boarding may be difficult or impossible, for example if the platform is too high or steep.
Practical tips:
- In the route planner on the De Lijn website or app, accessible stops and lines are marked with a wheelchair symbol.
- If your stop isn’t marked, check other nearby stops on your route: sometimes an earlier or later stop is fully accessible.

- When you arrive at an accessible stop, the driver will deploy a ramp if necessary.
- In the bus or tram, always use the designated wheelchair space and sit with your back against the safety plate for stability.
Free travel with De Lijn
- People with a disability can qualify for a free subscription.
- Your carer can also travel for free with the NMBS/SNCB Free Carer Card.
3 additional tips for a smooth journey
- Plan your route at quieter times, especially if you need to make connections.
- If you use an electric wheelchair, make sure the battery is fully charged before departure.
- Keep the customer service numbers handy in case of emergencies: De Lijn: 015 40 88 40 or NMBS/SNCB: 02 607 30 00.
Well prepared?
With a little preparation, you can travel easily and stress-free with your wheelchair on public transport. If you’re ever unsure about the accessibility of a bus, tram, or train, or if you need assistance, don’t hesitate to ask. Most drivers and station staff are happy to help.
Enjoy your journey!
