Sports you can enjoy with a power wheelchair: 4 great options

Sporten elektrische rolstoel voetbal

Your power wheelchair gives you independence, but it can also be your ticket to fun and fitness. Whether you love competition or simply want to move more for pleasure, there are plenty of sports you can try. Here are four that might surprise you.

1. Boccia

Boccia is a bit like pétanque. It’s a Paralympic precision sport played individually, in pairs, or in teams. The aim? Score points by getting your leather balls closer to the small white target ball – the “jack” – than your opponent does.

Is boccia for you?

Definitely, if you enjoy a calm, strategic game where focus is key. Even with limited arm movement, you can still play — using your hand, foot, or an assistant who helps you launch the ball.

Fun fact: meet the Vigo Boccia Holder

At the request of G-sport Vlaanderen, Vigo developed a special ball holder for boccia players. It attaches to your wheelchair so you can easily reach your leather balls during the game.

2. Wheelchair dancing

The name says it all: dancing in a wheelchair – but the possibilities are endless. You can dance solo or with a partner, explore freestyle, Latin, or even Viennese waltz, and take part recreationally or competitively.

Is wheelchair dancing for you?

Yes, if you love music, movement, and self-expression.

3. Powerchair hockey

Powerchair hockey is a fast, exciting team sport. Two teams of five players face off using a hand stick or a T-stick attached to the wheelchair to pass, shoot, and block. The goal? Score as many times as possible in a goal that’s just 20 cm high.

Is powerchair hockey for you?

A great choice if you enjoy speed, strategy, and teamwork. You can play at any level — from local club games to international competitions. Even if you don’t have much physical strength, your control and tactics can make you a key player.

4. Powerchair football (soccer)

In powerchair football, you drive a specially designed electric wheelchair with a guard at the front to strike the ball. It’s played 4-a-side, but the rest of the game is just like regular football, adapted for powerchairs.

Is powerchair football for you?

If you love fast, tactical team sports with plenty of action, absolutely.
